Actress and filmmaker Olajumoke Ajadi has spoken on the growing complexity of the talking stage in modern relationships, linking the phenomenon to emotional unavailability, fear of commitment, and the paradox of hyper-connected yet disconnected dating culture.
Ajadi, whose film Talking Stage movie stars Diva Gold, Jire Ogunleye, Tierny Olalere, and others made the remarks in an interview with Potpourri.
“I believe the talking stage has become one of the most complicated phases of modern relationships because people are constantly caught between desire and uncertainty. We live in a time where communication is instant, yet genuine connection feels more difficult than ever. There are too many distractions, too many options, and too many unspoken expectations. A lot of people are present physically or digitally, but not emotionally. That’s where the confusion begins… mixed signals, inconsistent effort, and unclear intentions,” she said.
The filmmaker also weighed in on the rising reluctance to commit, attributing it to emotional self-protection rather than indifference.
“Yes, I do think people are more afraid of commitment now than before. A lot of that fear comes from past experiences, heartbreak, and the pressure of vulnerability. People want love, but they are also afraid of being hurt, disappointed, or losing their sense of independence. So instead of defining relationships, many choose to remain in a space that feels safe but uncertain. The talking stage often becomes a comfort zone where feelings grow, but clarity is delayed,” she added.
On the message people can glean from Taking Stage, she said: “The message I hope viewers take away from the movie is that love cannot truly survive without honest communication. Love is not just about chemistry or attraction; it is about understanding, truth, and the courage to express what you really feel.
When communication is missing, assumptions take over, and that is where relationships begin to break down. I want viewers to reflect on the importance of being intentional with people’s hearts and to understand that clarity is one of the purest forms of respect in love”
