The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the Kampala Convention Domestication Act into law.
Kalu described the move as a significant step toward restoring the dignity of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and strengthening their welfare across the country.
The Deputy Speaker, who sponsored the bill alongside six other lawmakers, said the legislation was designed to address the challenges faced by displaced persons in Nigeria.
He noted that the President’s assent reflects a leadership style driven by compassion and a commitment to humanity.
“You can sign bills that have to do with the Electoral Act and benefit from them, but when you sign a bill that concerns people who may not give you anything in return, it shows leadership with a human face,” Kalu said.
Kalu also commended the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, for his role in the domestication process, noting that his support demonstrated the government’s commitment to people-centred governance.
He emphasized the need for effective implementation of the Act and urged state governments to domesticate the convention in their respective laws, adding that mechanisms are being put in place to ensure compliance.
Meanwhile, a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), led by Doris El Doueihy, visited Kalu to commend his efforts, noting that Nigeria is setting a positive example for other African countries.
