Right now each member tunes their own notifications. It would help if the space owner could set a sensible default per space — for example, an Announcements space defaults to email-on-every-post.
Members could still override. Would this overstep, or is it a fair owner control?

For what it is worth, the same approach works with the PMPro adapter — the membership side is identical from here.
Tried this on a staging copy first and it behaved exactly as described. Confident enough to roll it to production now.
