President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the Board of Trustees overseeing Ghana’s National Cathedral project, ending the board’s role in managing the project.

The directive was communicated in a letter dated September 18, 2026, and signed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga.

The trustees, chaired by Apostle Prof Opoku Onyinah, have been directed to liaise with the project consultant and formally hand over the National Cathedral project site to the Ministry by October 31, 2026.

The Ministry said the handover is intended “to allow Government to determine the future of the project.”

In the letter addressed to the chairman and members of the board, Ayariga stated: “His Excellency the President has directed the dissolution of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana Project with immediate effect.”

The Minister also conveyed the President’s appreciation to the trustees for their service.

“I wish to thank you for your commitment to promoting the Christian faith in the country,” Ayariga said on behalf of President Mahama.

The dissolution comes as Mahama has maintained that the National Cathedral was a personal pledge made by former President Nana Akufo-Addo rather than a national policy priority.

Mahama has also said that while he does not oppose the idea of Ghana having a national cathedral as a Christian, his administration will not use taxpayers’ money to fund or continue the project.
