Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has urged residents and road users in Jamestown to cooperate with authorities as the government begins evacuating accumulated waste from the area.

Ayariga said this after joining President John Dramani Mahama and other officials at James Town for the sod-cutting ceremony marking the start of the evacuation and clearing exercise.

The government has begun moving waste from the Jamestown site as part of efforts to address the area’s longstanding sanitation challenges.

In a statement shared on social media, Ayariga said the intervention would help address the health and environmental risks associated with the accumulated waste.

“This intervention will address longstanding sanitation challenges, reduce the risks associated with accumulated waste including disease, odours, flooding and other environmental hazards and help make Accra cleaner, safer and more liveable,” he said.

He acknowledged that the exercise would affect traffic temporarily because of the movement of dump trucks and other work vehicles.

“I appeal to residents and road users to bear with the movement of dump trucks and temporary traffic disruptions,” Ayariga stated.

He urged motorists to slow down, remain alert and keep a safe distance from the trucks and other vehicles involved in the exercise.

“Please slow down, remain alert, keep a safe distance from work vehicles, follow officials’ directions and use alternative routes where advised,” he added.

Ayariga also called on residents to support the exercise by changing practices that contribute to the accumulation of waste.

“I urge residents to support this effort by avoiding indiscriminate dumping and keeping nearby roads, drains and public spaces clean,” he said.

He said public cooperation would be important to ensuring that the current intervention produces lasting improvements in sanitation.

“Together, we can sustain the gains from this intervention and build a healthier, safer Greater Accra,” Ayariga added.
