Reggae musician Ras Kuuku has called for greater responsibility from artistes when sharing content that references people living with disabilities.
He said the principle should apply regardless of who is involved, arguing that it would be wrong for anyone to use a person’s disability as material for a social media message.
“So imagine somebody does something, maybe a visually impaired person, then me coming out posting a blind person not finding his way,” Ras Kuuku said in an interview with 3Music.
His comments followed a controversial social media post by Sarkodie featuring a physically challenged man using crutches. The post appeared after Stonebwoy’s OVO concert and was interpreted by some fans and media commentators as a possible reference to Stonebwoy, who has a physical leg impairment from a childhood accident.
Ras Kuuku said incidents of this nature should not be dismissed simply because the people involved are popular artistes.
“We should condemn some things. We shouldn’t think some artistes are mental. No, we are all human beings,” he said.
He also argued that the issue should prompt people and relevant associations to speak out when disability-related content is used in a manner they consider inappropriate.
“People should have called him to order,” he said, stressing the need for people to address such conduct rather than remain silent.
Ras Kuuku maintained that public figures should remember that their large audiences can amplify whatever they post and that artistes are not exempt from criticism when their actions become controversial.
