Senator representing Niger East Senatorial District, Mohammed Sani Musa, has called for a thorough, transparent and independent investigation into the deaths of miners detained following a security operation in Niger State.
Musa, in a condolence message issued on September 16, 2026, described the deaths as deeply distressing and urged authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actual cause of death.
The senator extended his condolences to the Niger State Government, the bereaved families and affected communities on behalf of his family, the people of Niger East Senatorial District and his office.
He said the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the miners or allegations against them should not diminish the value of their lives.
“Whatever the circumstances surrounding their arrest or the allegations against them, every human life is precious,” Musa said.
According to him, persons placed in detention are entrusted to the care and protection of the authorities, making their safety and dignity a responsibility that must remain paramount.
He said the tragedy was particularly painful because the deceased were members of families and communities who were now confronted with an unimaginable loss.
“These men were someone’s sons, fathers, brothers, husbands and loved ones. Behind every number is a human being, a family and a community now facing an unimaginable loss,” he said.
Musa called for the investigation to cover the conditions under which the miners were held, the medical attention provided to them and those who survived, as well as the circumstances leading to their deaths.
He said the investigation should establish the truth and ensure accountability if negligence, wrongdoing or failure of duty was established.
“The truth must be established, and where there has been negligence, wrongdoing or failure of duty, appropriate accountability must follow,” the senator said.
He also urged residents and other stakeholders to remain calm and allow the relevant authorities to complete their investigations.
Musa stressed that the rule of law, human dignity and the sanctity of human life should remain at the centre of the response to the tragedy.
The senator prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased and grant them Al-Jannatul Firdaus, while asking God to give their families the strength and fortitude to bear the loss.
He also prayed for peace, healing and protection from further tragedies in Niger East Senatorial District and the entire Niger State.
