A Naija woman, Enwongo Friday Akpan, who happens to be a widow, has warned Facebook user Prince Levite against dictating how she should live after the death of her husband.
In a post on X, Akpan said losing her husband did not mean she had lost her right to live, be happy or smile.
“Anyone that knows this 2 minutes man should tell him to avoid me,” she wrote, directly addressing Prince Levite.
“You don’t get to decide how a widow is supposed to live, laugh or find happiness. I lost my husband; I did not lose my right to live.”
Akpan said she would not apologise for being happy and argued that her happiness should not be treated as an offence.
“If my happiness offends you, that is something you need to examine within yourself, not something I need to apologise for,” she said.
She also criticised the use of her grief against her, saying such behaviour reflected more on the person making the comments than on her.
“And honestly, using someone’s grief as a weapon says far more about your character than it ever will about mine,” she added.
Akpan stressed that she would continue to mourn and honour her late husband while also allowing herself to enjoy life.
“My husband died. My life didn’t. I will grieve him, miss him, honour his memory and still have every right to smile and be happy,” she wrote.
She further warned against treating widowhood as a punishment.
“You don’t get to turn my widowhood into a punishment,” Akpan stated.
She ended her message with a Nigerian expression about death being something that can happen to anyone.
“Death na rain, e dey fall for every roof. I’m glad you have a wife at home,” she added.
