Deputy Majority Whip Richard Acheampong has questioned whether the Minority has the expertise needed to conduct a parliamentary investigation into narcotics trafficking.
Acheampong’s comments came after First Deputy Minority Whip and Tolon MP Habib Iddrisu led the Minority in invoking Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Order 53 of Parliament’s Standing Orders to seek an extraordinary sitting.
The Minority says it has secured the required 15 per cent of MPs to trigger the recall and wants Parliament to investigate a series of narcotics seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana.
But Acheampong questioned what lawmakers would add to investigations already being handled by the government and security agencies.
“Do you, Habib, have the capacity to investigate this matter? Are you a narcotic expert?” he asked on Joy FM.
He also questioned who would undertake the technical aspects of the proposed investigation.
“Who’s going to do this for you? If the government has gone to sleep, then all of us will be worried. Steps have been taken. So what is the point again?” he added.
According to Acheampong, the government has already convened a meeting and engaged other security agencies to deal with the narcotics-related concerns.
“The government has taken steps to deal with all these matters. A meeting has been convened. Other security agencies have been engaged to deal with all these matters,” he said.
He further maintained that the Speaker would have to determine whether the Minority’s request should lead to a recall of the House.
