INEC Uploads NDC’s Modified Logo, Updates Party Leadership On Official Portal

The Independent National Electoral Commission has updated the details of the Nigeria Democratic Congress on its official portal, uploading the party’s modified logo and reflecting its current national leadership.
The update gives formal electoral visibility to the party’s revised identity ahead of the 2027 general election and follows its request for INEC’s approval to modify its logo.
The commission’s portal now identifies Senator Moses Cleopas Zuwoghe as the NDC National Chairman. Former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, remains the party’s national leader.
The development comes amid controversies surrounding the party’s registration, leadership structure, logo and list of candidates submitted for the forthcoming elections.
The NDC had earlier directed its members, candidates and supporters to align their campaign materials with the logo recognised by INEC to prevent confusion among voters and avoid disputes over its identity on ballot papers.
Dickson also reportedly replaced the party’s flag with one bearing the modified logo, explaining that all campaign materials and other official publications would henceforth carry the symbol reflected on the electoral commission’s portal.
The uploading of the logo and leadership details is significant because Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution requires a political association seeking recognition as a political party to ensure that its name, emblem or motto does not possess ethnic or religious connotations and that its headquarters is situated in Abuja.
The Electoral Act also gives INEC regulatory responsibilities over political parties, including monitoring their conventions, congresses, finances and nomination of candidates for elections.
However, the commission’s administrative update does not, on its own, determine disputes over the validity of candidates allegedly submitted by competing interests within the party. Such nomination disagreements may still be resolved through the party’s internal mechanisms or by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The NDC had recently accused INEC of replacing some candidates it nominated for the 2027 general election with individuals allegedly unknown to the party, particularly in Anambra State.
INEC rejected the allegation, maintaining that political parties were responsible for uploading their candidates’ details through access codes provided by the commission.
The electoral body explained that it did not select candidates for political parties or interfere with their internal nomination processes.
NDC National Chairman Zuwoghe, however, maintained that the list appearing on the commission’s portal differed from the one authorised and submitted by the party’s leadership. He indicated that the party would seek judicial intervention to restore what it described as its authentic list of candidates.
The portal update therefore clarifies the logo and leadership currently recognised by INEC but does not necessarily settle every pending dispute involving the party’s candidates, internal administration or previous court proceedings.
The development comes as the NDC prepares to contest its first general election, with former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as its presidential candidate and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.
