Opobo/Nkoro LGA Chairman Equips Marine Police to Boost Waterways Security

In a decisive move to curb maritime crime and ensure the safety of lives and properties, the Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area (LGA) in Rivers State, Hon. James A. James, has donated high-powered equipment and security gadgets to the special squad of the Marine Police in the area.

The presentation ceremony, which took place recently in Opobo Town, the council headquarters, underscores the local administration’s commitment to proactive security management. Among the key assets handed over to the security agency were two brand-new 85-horsepower outboard engines, modern communication gadgets, and tactical gear designed to bolster patrol, surveillance, and rapid-response operations across the riverine channels.

Strengthening Maritime Security and Economic Growth

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. James A. James emphasized that the safety of the waterways is vital to the socio-economic survival of the Opobo/Nkoro people. Because the LGA is primarily riverine, residents rely heavily on water transportation for commerce, fishing, and daily commuting. Improving security on these routes directly impacts the local economy by fostering a secure environment for traders, fishers, and investors.

“Our waterways must remain safe for our people and visitors alike,” Hon. James stated. He noted that the deployment of the high-capacity outboard engines would enable the Marine Police to navigate difficult terrains, cover more ground quickly, respond swiftly to distress calls, and effectively deter sea pirates and other criminal elements.

The Chairman also reiterated that this intervention aligns with the security blueprint of the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, which prioritizes the protection of lives and investments across all local government areas.
