NiMet forecasts thunderstorms, moderate rains across Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and moderate rains across several parts of Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday. The weather advisory, which details the atmospheric conditions expected over the three days, warns of potential disruptions to daily activities, transport, and public safety.

According to NiMet’s official weather outlook, Sunday’s atmospheric conditions are expected to begin with morning thunderstorms over parts of the northern states, particularly Borno, Taraba, and Yobe. As the day progresses, thunderstorms are anticipated to spread to other parts of the North, including Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina. The North-Central region, covering Abuja, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Plateau, is projected to experience afternoon and evening rains. Meanwhile, the southern inland and coastal states, such as Lagos, Delta, and Rivers, are expected to experience moderate rain showers during the morning and afternoon hours.

Moving into Monday, NiMet predicts a continuation of the rainy pattern. The agency forecasts morning thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, and Bauchi, with localized rains expected over the North-Central zone during the afternoon and evening. The southern region is likely to witness continuous rainfall, which could result in waterlogged roads and reduced visibility for drivers. Coastal areas are advised to prepare for heavy downpours that may trigger flash floods in low-lying locations.

By Tuesday, the meteorological forecast indicates that the northern region will remain under the influence of morning thunderstorms, especially in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara. Widespread rains are expected to persist across the central and southern states later in the day. The persistent wet weather across these regions is due to the influx of moisture-laden winds from the Atlantic Ocean.

In response to these projections, NiMet has issued critical safety advisories. Emergency management authorities are urged to be on high alert to respond to potential flood incidents. Residents in urban areas should clear drainage systems to facilitate the free flow of water. Furthermore, because strong winds often precede thunderstorms, the public is advised to avoid standing under trees, large billboards, or uncompleted structures.

For the aviation sector, NiMet advises airline operators to monitor weather updates closely and plan flight schedules accordingly to avoid adverse weather conditions. Commuters and motorists are also urged to exercise extreme caution on the roads, as wet surfaces and poor visibility can increase the risk of road accidents.
