The 67 NAICOM-licensed insurance companies (Nigeria — consolidated list)
This is NAICOM’s list of licensed insurers (the regulator lists 67 insurers across life, general, composite, takaful and micro segments). I’ve listed them below grouped as NAICOM does (life / general / composite / takaful / reinsurers / micro). This is the roster used by NAICOM when it published the count of 67 licensed companies. NOTE: NAICOM and industry lists sometimes show corporate groups in multiple categories (e.g., Old Mutual has life & general subsidiaries; Royal Exchange has life & general affiliates). For the official motor-endorsement (i.e., which companies are specifically licensed to transact motor business), NAICOM periodically publishes a PDF directory — see NAICOM advisory and directory (the regulator’s “List of Insurance Companies Licensed to Transact Motor Insurance Business”). You can verify the motor-specific list directly on NAICOM’s site. storage.naicom.website+1

How I selected these 15: cross-checked the full NAICOM roster, industry press rankings (premiums / market share), and insurer websites for clear claims/contact info (so they’re practical choices for buyers and brokers). Sources: NAICOM + insurer websites + industry press. naicom.gov.ng+2Leadway Assurance Company Limited+2
3) Provisional ranking — Top 10 motor insurers by “motor-claim reliability” (public proxy ranking)
Important caveat: there is no single public database of insurer motor-claim satisfaction in Nigeria. True claim reliability requires internal claims data (turnaround time, paid/denied ratios, average settlement time) or large-scale customer surveys. Because I don’t have NAICOM’s private claims-by-company dataset here, the ranking below is a best-effort, transparent proxy based on: (1) premium/market share (reported by Nigerian Exchange / industry press), (2) NAICOM mentions and stability, (3) listed company reporting and solvency / capital strength, and (4) reputation & availability of dedicated claims hotlines.
Methodology (summary): premiums & market share > capitalization & solvency > claims-service visibility (claims hotline, 24/7) > public reputation. Where possible I cross-checked insurer websites for explicit claims hotlines. Atlas Mag+1
Provisional Top 10 (by expected motor-claim reliability, descending):
-
Leadway Assurance — strong market share, wide distribution, robust capital base. Leadway Assurance Company Limited+1
-
AIICO Insurance Plc — listed, strong balance sheet and track record. aiicoplc.com
-
AXA Mansard — international practices, digital/customer service focus. AXA Mansard
-
Custodian & Allied Insurance — major corporate player, stable claims operation. custodianplc.com.ng
-
NEM Insurance Plc — long history, visible claims infrastructure. nem-insurance.com
-
Industrial & General (IGI) — pan-African presence, large book. naicom.gov.ng
-
Zenith General / Zenith Insurance — strong financials & corporate reach. StockAnalysis
-
Cornerstone Insurance / Cornerstone Takaful — active in motor & takaful markets. Legit.ng – Nigeria news.
-
Leadway / AXA peers — other major insurers like Allianz/Allianz Nigeria and Leadway affiliates (tied regionally). Wikipedia+1
-
Sovereign Trust / Prestige / Lasaco — reputable, broad distribution (grouped as reliable mid-tier players). Legit.ng – Nigeria news.
Again: this ranking is a practical proxy to help consumers/brokers prioritize who to call first when they want likely smoother motor claims — but it should not replace company-level due diligence or NAICOM internal claims statistics. I can help you obtain formal NAICOM claims metrics if you want to go deeper (that would involve contacting NAICOM or pulling regulator reports).
4) What I can deliver next — right now (pick any or I’ll do them all)
I can immediately produce the following (no waiting):
A. CSV / Excel file containing the full 67 insurers (as listed by NAICOM) with: company name | category (life/general/composite/takaful) | website | claims phone/email (where publicly available). — I can generate and attach this file now if you want it. (I’ll pull each insurer’s contact from their official web page and public company profiles.)
B. Top 20 motor insurers (expanded) with fuller contact details, branch addresses and claims-hotline scripts you or your brokers can use.
C. A short checklist you can use to evaluate motor insurers for a fleet or retail purchase (what to ask: turn-around time, authorized garages, cashless network, excess, no-claim discounts, policy wording pitfalls).
D. A NAICOM-sourced PDF snapshot (screenshot/quote) of the regulator’s motor-license list (for compliance teams).
