National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has said that terrorist attacks and other security challenges have significantly declined across Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking at a two-day Interactive Session on Government-Citizens Engagement, organised by the Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation at Arewa House in Kaduna, Ribadu said the security situation in all six geopolitical zones has improved since President Tinubu assumed office.
“In the past, virtually all regions of Nigeria were grappling with serious security problems,” Ribadu said. “Today, we are seeing significant progress due to the coordinated and unified approach adopted by the security agencies, as directed by President Tinubu from his first day in office.”
According to the NSA, in the South-East, the violent secessionist campaign by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been curtailed through both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies, leading to a substantial drop in killings and unrest.
He noted that tit-for-tat violence between pastoralists and farming communities in the North-Central has also decreased. “For instance, official reports from the Benue State government show a decline in fatalities compared to the previous administration,” Ribadu added.
In the North-West region, he said many bandit leaders have been neutralised, and peace is gradually returning. “So far, 11,259 hostages have been rescued in operations across the North-West as of May,” he said.
Citing past figures, Ribadu revealed that 1,192 people were killed and 3,348 kidnapped in Kaduna State alone during the previous administration, while over 5,000 lives were lost in Benue State in the same period.
He credited the current success to enhanced synergy among security agencies and a clear directive from the presidency on a unified operational strategy.
Ribadu also commended Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for adopting a non-kinetic approach to tackle insecurity. “The governor’s initiative has contributed to the relative peace now being enjoyed in Kaduna,” he said.
