The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed a meeting with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as part of addressing some issues within the party, which concern the electoral body.
INEC in a statement on Tuesday via its official Facebook account, said it received a high-powered delegation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.
Naija News reports that the delegation was warmly received by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, alongside National Commissioners, senior aides, and key directors of the Commission.
The INEC Chairman, Professor Yakubu, said the commission would not slacken in its duties in ensuring political parties follow laid down rules.
“The purpose of the visit was clear: to engage INEC directly on pressing internal matters affecting the PDP, particularly those requiring the Commission’s regulatory clarification.
“In his opening remarks, Professor Yakubu reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to its statutory responsibilities, stating, “Our role is to ensure that the rules are followed,” the INEC statement read.
With formalities concluded, the meeting transitioned into a closed-door session, where the PDP leadership and INEC officials would discuss and seek mutual understanding on the path forward.
Meanwhile, earlier, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had announced that it is set to proceed with its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting despite a recent objection raised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The PDP, in a statement on Tuesday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the NEC meeting would hold on Monday, 30th June, as previously agreed.
