The governing council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has removed Professor Joseph Ikechebelu from his position as Acting Vice-Chancellor, just two months after his appointment. In his place, the council has appointed Carol Umobi, a PROFESSOR in HUMAN RIGHTS LAW Department, as the new Acting Vice-Chancellor.
Ikechebelu had taken over from the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof Charles Esimone, whose tenure ended in May this year. However, the governing council, chaired by Ambassador Greg Mbadiwe, decided to replace him after an emergency meeting held on July 19, 2024.
The appointment letter presented to Umobi, signed by the council chairman, congratulated her on her new role, which is effective from Monday, July 22, 2024, for a period not exceeding six months. The letter expressed the council’s confidence in Umobi’s ability to lead the institution during this period.
Prior to Umobi’s appointment, there was tension in the university, with soldiers and police stationed in front of the Senate building where the emergency council meeting took place. It was reported that the council had empowered a few professors to hold a Senate meeting, with the aim of removing Ikechebelu and replacing him with either Professor Carol Arinze-Umeobi or Professor F. J. C. Odibo.
The Senate, in response to a memo from the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, nominated Professors Arinze-Umeobi and Odibo as the only two qualified candidates for the position of Acting Vice-Chancellor, based on their age and retirement dates.
The sudden change in leadership has raised questions about the stability and governance of the university, as stakeholders await further developments and the impact of this decision on the institution’s academic and administrative processes.
