Inside a commercial bus today, the driver, in a bid to be humorous called a young woman who should not be less or more than 30, “Iye”. The word “Iye” in Benin language means “Mother”, but we mostly say it in the context of an elderly woman here especially if she is older than 50years of age. That is why in Benin, you hear “Ko Iye” flying everywhere anywhere we come across elderly woman whether she has children or not, whether she is related to us or not, it is a culture thing.
Back to this story, the bus driver called the passenger “Iye” amd ushered her into the bus. Immediately she retorted and told him she didn’t like being called Iye that whether the bus driver know her age, that she is not even up to 30. The driver told her “but you be mother na, nor be you born these children wey enter bus with you”.
Another passenger told her to please calm down that the driver was just being playful that he meant to say “mummy”. Another wahala burst out again. The woman said nobody should call her mummy or Iye.
The issue lingered, the woman yelled while the bus driver and other passenger continued to call her Iye. She had not gotten to her destination when she asked that he stops the bus, that she cannot take it anymore.
Throughout the feud, I didn’t utter one statement even though she was seated next to me and yelling into my ears.
Do you think she overreacted or the bus drivers should have stopped when she told him she didn’t like to be referred to as “Iye” ?
The driver and the other passenger when they saw the woman alighted the bus. Dem think say she dey joke ????
