At the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Garki Branch meeting, prominent lawyer Afam Osigwe, SAN, gave a clarion call urging the association to champion safety, security and accountability in the country.
Decrying the alarming trend of violence including kidnappings, Osigwe charged the NBA to assertively engage security agencies, especially the police, to effectively protect lives and properties. He made reference to distressing incidents like the kidnapping of a lawyer Mr. Chris Agidy and the tragic killing of a lawyer in Nnewi.
“The NBA must use its collective voice and influence on security agencies to conduct swift, thorough investigations and bring offenders to book to ensure accountability,” he stressed.
Osigwe emphasized that the police have a huge responsibility in rising to the occasion by meticulously investigating every threat to citizens’ well-being and ensuring perpetrators face prosecution. This, he noted, would deter further incidents.
He called on the leadership of the NBA Garki Branch to take decisive action in holding security agencies responsible for safeguarding lives within the legal community and the wider Nigerian society.
Osigwe’s passionate submission serves as a wake up call for the NBA to strongly advocate for the fundamental rights to life, safety and security of all people.
