For Seyi, a student residing in Ibadan, caring for a loved one is a little more expensive because of the recent hike in the cost of transportation.
Speaking to FIJ, Seyi, who has to visit her convalescing father at the University College Hospital in Ibadan every week, lamented the sudden impact of the new pump price on her personal activities.
According to the student, the increase in pump price may appear inconsequential on the surface, but cumulatively, it is significant.
“I can’t go to see my dad in UCH every week again because transportation cost is now quite on the high side. It’d normally cost me N350 to go from my place to UCH, now it costs about N550 to go. I am just a student; I don’t work,” Seyi told FIJ.

Just like Seyi, Tobi, a student entrepreneur at the University of Ibadan, has also been unable to effectively carry out his business transactions like he used to because of the latest hike in fuel price.
In an interview with FIJ, Tobi said the increase had adversely affected his business in the area of logistics, cost of purchase and delivery.
“I try to do my business now without having to leave my house except when it is necessary. The hike in fuel price has really affected a lot of things. The logistics riders I use when delivering products to my customers have now doubled their charges and it is telling heavily on my profit,” Tobi lamented.
Williams, yet another Ibadan-based student, who has to go for laboratory postings at the University College Hospital, used to be sure that he could “finish strong” this session by showing up at work for the remaining five days that are left on his posting calendar.
With the recent increase in transportation cost and a strong rumour that his posting tenure could be extended by the college, he is no longer sure of achieving his academic goal.
He fears that the increase in fuel price and a “prolonged academic work” may translate to his frequent absence at the laboratory.
FIJ gathered that other Ibadan residents now trek long distances to their destinations.

How Pump Price Evolved in 24 YearsMichael, a recently graduated student of the University of Ibadan, believes that the transport fare increase is not so significant.
Despite the belief however, and like other Ibadan residents, he has taken to trekking bearable distances in order to save cost.
Transport costs have increased across Nigeria due to the increases in fuel pump price in May and July. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) warned Nigerians in May that the prices would continue to fluctuate due to market forces.
