A medical professional has explained the likely cause of the death of Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old student of Chrisland International High School.
Lagosnews earlier reported that Adeniran lost her life shortly after she slumped during the school’s inter-house sports held at Agege Stadium, Lagos.
Dr Genny Kalu, a medical surgeon and anaesthesiologist, has now said that the likely cause of death was a case of Lactic Acidosis.
According to MedlinePlus, Lactic acidosis refers to lactic acid buildup in the bloodstream. Lactic acid is produced when oxygen levels become low in cells within the areas of the body where metabolism takes place.
Dr. Kalu explained that vigorous exercise can run out of oxygen reserve quickly. Naturally, every human being possesses a “reserve” volume of oxygen in the lungs after normal, passive exhalation (Functional residual capacity).
“Running is done in Anaerobic respiration at intervals. Hence you begin to experience Lactic acid accumulation, and if not gotten rid of Lactic Acidosis occurs leading to a cardiopulmonary standstill,” she said.
Explaining how the metabolic condition can be life-threatening, the licensed anaesthesiologist said, “Within four minutes of no oxygen, there will be a cardiac arrest. In 10 minutes, the brain will go into clinical death, and if resuscitation is proving abortive, irreversible brain death in 15 minutes.”
The medical practitioner also said that vigorous physical activity, like sports, should incorporate medical teams trained to conduct Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) measures.
“In a case of vigorous exercise like inter-house sports, let your medical team be there with adequate CPR MEASURES..please, school owners take note. Prevention is better than cure. Oxygen saturation monitor on fingertips in such incidences is very crucial.”
The doctor also said that health checks should be conducted on students before engaging them in vigorous physical activity.
“Ensure at intervals, you rehydrate adequately. Before, during, and after the exercise. Drink enough water, especially artesian alkaline mineral water, which will mop up Lactic Acid Accumulation in 8-10 minutes because of its micro clustering properties,” she advised.
Background
A student of Chrisland International High School, Opebi, Lagos, Whitney Adeniran reportedly died during the school’s inter-house sports in Lagos.
According to the 12-year-old girl’s father, Dr. Michael Adeyemi Adeniran, the child died at Agege Stadium on Thursday, February 9.
He said the child had no health condition or sickness as of the time the school bus picked her up for the event.
In a Facebook post where he was seeking justice and explanation, he wrote, “To the biggest shock of my life by 1 pm in the afternoon, I got a call from my wife that she was informed that our daughter slumped at the inter-house sport and she was rushed to the clinic…My wife was at the venue even before the event started. She was never informed or called until they conveyed our child out of the venue before they informed her.”
“I gave Chrisland school a healthy vibrant young girl what Chrisland returned to me is a dead child. My entire family is in deep sorrow but the school Authority claimed they know nothing about my daughter’s death and all they know is that my daughter slumped and died.”
