The General Manager, Lagos State Agricultural Land Holdings Authority (ALHA), Mr. Dapo Are, has gone on an inspection tour of a rice field owned by the State Government at Eegua, Ogun state.
Speaking during the visit, Are said the Lagos State Government had leased the large expanse of land in Ogun to cultivate paddy rice which will eventually be supplied to the newly commissioned rice processing mill at Imota, Lagos.
He explained that during the tour of the rice field, it was observed that the land is covered by secondary vegetation which will make it easy for cultivation and thus be of great economic benefit not only to the State Government but to the people of Lagos as well.
His words, “The rice field will provide employment for Lagosians who are interested in cultivating paddy rice while residing within the farmland settlement. Apart from serving as raw materials for the production of rice at Imota Rice Mill, its proximity between Lagos and Ogun States has an economic advantage in terms of logistics”.
In a similar vein, the representative of Swagco, the Company overseeing the management of the Rice Field. Mr. Adegboyega Osobu, stated that his company has completed arrangements to ensure that the land is effectively managed.
Osobu added that his organisation also intends to support the host communities with the provision of roads, health care services and schools as part of its corporate social responsibilities.
Oba Adeleye Dosumu, the Onigua of Eegua commended the Lagos State Government on behalf of the community for the investment in the cultivation of Rice, while he promised to give maximum cooperation and support to the project manager.
Other members of the inspection team are Mr. John Adeosun of Ogun State Ministry of Agriculture and Engineer Shekete Olumide of Rice Value Chain Unit, ALHA among others.
