Julián Alvarez has returned to training with his Atletico Madrid teammates after recovering from an illness that kept him out of the squad for several days.

The Argentina international resumed group training on Sunday following Atletico’s victory over Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.

Alvarez had been absent from team training for two days because of illness before spending another two sessions working individually as he followed a personalised recovery programme.

His return comes with just two days remaining before the summer transfer window closes, with uncertainty continuing over his future at the Spanish club.

Alvarez had not trained with his teammates since Atletico’s LaLiga meeting with Villarreal at the Metropolitano. However, he returned to individual work on Friday before joining the rest of the squad for Sunday’s session.

The forward’s return is also significant for Atletico as the club prepares for its next LaLiga fixture against Athletic Club at San Mamés.

The Madrid side is keen to have Alvarez fully integrated into the squad as quickly as possible if he remains at the club beyond the transfer deadline.

Atletico sporting director Mateu Alemany had already expressed his desire to see the forward return to the squad.

“We hope he rejoins quickly and is available for the next LaLiga match.”

Alvarez was among the players who trained with the group on Sunday, while those who started against Sevilla carried out recovery work.

With the transfer window set to close in two days, attention remains focused on whether Alvarez will stay at Atletico or make a late move elsewhere.

For now, his return to group training provides a boost for Diego Simeone’s side as preparations begin for the trip to San Mamés.
