Opobo/Nkoro LG Launches Monthly Sanitation Exercise to Combat Flooding

In a proactive move to address the perennial challenge of flash flooding, the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Council has officially launched a monthly environmental sanitation exercise. This strategic initiative aims to clear blocked drainages, restore environmental hygiene, and mitigate the severe impact of seasonal heavy rains within the communities of the Local Government Area.

According to an official statement signed by the Chairman of the Council’s Environmental and Sanitation Committee, Warisenibo Robert A. Cookey-Gam, the maiden edition of the exercise is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 2024. The sanitation drive is designed to encourage active participation from all residents, business owners, and community leaders across the various wards of Opobo/Nkoro.

A Strategic Move Against Seasonal Flooding

Opobo/Nkoro, known for its unique riverine topography, is historically susceptible to flash flooding during the peak of the rainy season. To ensure maximum compliance and effectiveness, the Council has announced a temporary restriction of human and vehicular movement during the designated hours of the exercise, typically from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Essential service providers, however, will be exempted from this restriction.

Warisenibo Cookey-Gam urged residents to cooperate fully with sanitation marshals and law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that environmental safety is a collective responsibility. “We cannot fold our arms and watch floodwaters displace our families. This sanitation exercise is a sustainable step toward ensuring our drainage channels remain free-flowing and our communities remain safe,” he stated.

LG Boss Honored with Outstanding Leadership Awards

As the Local Government implements this vital environmental policy, the Executive Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro LGA has once again been recognized for his exemplary governance. The LG Boss has recently garnered several prestigious awards from various civil society organizations and community groups.

These latest accolades highlight his administration’s unwavering commitment to infrastructural development, grassroots empowerment, and proactive governance, particularly in the areas of public health, security, and environmental sustainability. Community stakeholders have widely lauded the Chairman’s double-pronged approach of delivering tangible development while actively protecting the local ecosystem. With these awards and the launch of the new sanitation mandate, the Opobo/Nkoro administration continues to set a benchmark for effective local governance in Rivers State.
