The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and three others over the unlawful killing of a suspect in the Effurun area of Delta State.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, who announced the dismissal, said the officers would be prosecuted.
The extra-judicial killing of the suspect, 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, by the ASP sparked outrage online.
The police had said that the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that Ogidi had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing “a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.”
Following the unlawful killing of Ogidi, Usman, and other members of his team were arrested and moved to the Force headquarters to face disciplinary actions.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had last week approved the dismissal and prosecution of the ASP and forwarded the recommendation to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
The action follows the outcome of a review by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which examined the incident alongside other internal disciplinary procedures.
Addressing an emergency press conference in Abuja, the IGP said the officer involved, along with members of his team, had been recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.
The police panel found that the officer “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.”

The disciplinary committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman, as well as other officers found culpable in the incident.
“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” the IGP had said.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he had added.
