Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has directed the Acting Chief Judge of the state, Justice Umar Abubakar to decongest prisons across the state.

He gave the order on Saturday while swearing in the Acting Grand Khadi, Khadi Sadiq Usman-Muktar at Government House, Birnin Kebbi.

The swearing in followed the retirement of his predecessor, Khadi Tukur Sani-Argungu, who clocked 60 years.

The governor said the directive became necessary in view of series of complaints about prison congestion being experienced in prisons across the state.

Idris, who tasked the newly sworn-in Acting Grand Khadi on justice, equity and fairness to all, also informed him that his choice was based on his track records and encouraged him to sustain the tempo for the good of his staff and the state at large.

Idris assured that his administration would do everything possible within the megre resources at its disposal to make the judicial workers happy.

While promising to operate an open door policy, the governor said his government is ready to welcome advice, suggestions and constructive criticism that would bring positive development to the state.

“Going by my background, all of you knew that I am a teacher, a unionist to the core and a labour leader who grew from Local Government to State Chairman to President of the largest trade union in Africa.

“In spite of that, I have never left you people. Wherever I am, I have never spent two weeks without coming back home. I want other people that have the interest of Kebbi to emulate this attitude,” he advised.

He said as a governor for all he will strive to meet the yearnings of the people of the state.

The governor assured that his ambition is to transform the state capital from “a glorified local government headquarters to a full-fledge state capital.”

Idris added that the road contracts recently awarded covered construction and reconstruction of major roads in the state capital, adding that while some roads would be dual carriage, others would be converted to triple carriage and modern roundabouts.

He added that flyovers would also be constructed in some places to reduce congestion, ease traffic and ensure smooth vehicular movement.
