Monday Onyekachi Ubani, a newly elevated Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has called on Nigerians to halt the ongoing protests across the country following widespread violence on the first day of demonstrations.
In an interview with TheScrutiny, Ubani, one of 87 lawyers recently appointed to the prestigious rank by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC), acknowledged that Nigerians have effectively communicated their hardships to the federal and state governments. However, he cautioned that if the protests continue in the same manner as Thursday, there is a high risk of hoodlums hijacking the movement and undermining its core purpose.
“My appeal is that we should try and avoid anything that will snowball into a national crisis and people cannot carry out economic activities,” Ubani stated. “That is not what we want for Nigeria. So, anything that will make Nigeria to go into such situation is what every person should avoid.”
While emphasizing the importance of expressing grievances and holding the government accountable for addressing the challenges faced by the masses, Ubani stressed that the protests must not lead to the destruction of the nation. He pointed out that what was intended to be a peaceful demonstration on Thursday descended into a major crisis, resulting in loss of life, looting, and property damage.
Ubani also called on the government at all levels to reduce their expenditure and allocate the country’s resources towards tackling the issues affecting the suffering population, particularly the high inflation rate. He underscored that the government must be sensitive and attentive to these concerns.
“I pray that this must not continue today,” Ubani appealed. “The point has been made that there is suffering in the land. The point has been made that prices of food items are beyond the reach of the ordinary Nigerians and people are dying of hunger and they are not enjoying the dividends of democracy. All these needs to be addressed.”
